The Big question: Will my child stay in band?
There are several factors to consider in regards to this question. I almost always suggest to the parents to consider renting instead of buying an instrument, (for the first year) even though we do both at Crossroads Music. If your child enjoys sports, there's a good chance he or she will drop band. On the other hand, band could be something they will stay in. Some school districts have a high turnover in band students while some school districts retain band students. The best place for this information is to talk with other parents who have or had a child in band in your district.
The FRIDAY hint. NEVER NEVER NEVER pay four bucks per reed or forty bucks for a box of 10 Van Doren clarinet reeds.
1. Never Never Never sign an instrument contract that includes interest!
2. Never Never sign a contract that does not have an "opt out" if your child drops band!
3.Never sign a contract if there is charge if you decide return the instrument.
4. Never sign a contract that will not allow you to exchange an instrument.
5. Never sign a contract unless it offers a Loss Damage Waiver. Expensive repair bills are a big part of a band companies profit. Always make sure that the company you rent from offers a free loaner instrument in the event yours malfunctions!!!!!!
6. Never buy from a commission paid salesman. And remember, shop around before you buy!!!!!!!
7. If you feel you are being pushed to buy from only one company and encouraged NOT to shop around, BEWARE! There are plenty of places to get a good horn.
